Week of August 4th - Discount Codes

I've come across some discounts for the upcoming week that I wanted to share with you. I have included the code below as well as a referral link to the site.

Nordstrom is having an anniversary sale until August 5th.  There is no discount code needed.

Purchase $30 or more of Sephora Collection items and get a free sample bag with the code TROOPSC

Missoma is a site for custom engraved jewelry.  They are currently offering free shipping on all U.S. orders and free custom engraving; no code needed.

The new Ole Henriksen Phat Glow Facial is launching Monday, 8/5/19! It claims to give you insta-perfect skin in 15 minutes.  Use code MAGICLINK2019 for free 2-day US shipping on orders containing Phat Glow Facial (1.7oz) from 8/5 - 8/23/19.

Ofra is one of my favorite brands when it comes to highlighters.  Their other products are great too, but I've never had anything but the best experience with their highlighters.  You can get 20% off with the code OFRAMAGIC thru 08/31/19

And of course, Raketun is the best way to get a discount in the form of cash back from so many different sites.  Basically you shop like normal and then get a percentage of your total purchase back as a check, gift card or paypal.  It's even easier when you install the browser extension, so then it automatically lets you know when you can be getting a rebate.  Plus, you get $10 for signing up and making your first purchase through them!

Simple at home workouts

I recently received some exercise equipment from King Athletic and I was excited to try them out.   While I am a big advocate of going to the gym because there is so much equipment there, I know that it's not always easy.  For me, it's usually laziness that prevents me from getting to the gym, so it's nice to know that I have some things on hang to get an at home workout.

I received a jump rope, resistance bands and massage balls. While I'm not being paid to write this, the items were sent to me complimentary for review.  Of course, I'm not going to lie to you and tell you something's great when it's not so read on to see what I think.

As I was adding to my at home workout list, I figured I would share them with you.  First up is the jump rope.  I love the simplicity of this tool.  It's a great cardio workout and practically everyone knows how to use it.  It's the ideal at home cardio for me because I'm not a runner and without a treadmill I'll just slow down to walking.  Jump ropes are fun and remind me of being a kid.

Let's talk about what you want to look for in a jump rope.  If are serious about using a jump rope for exercise and not just for fun, you'll want a plastic speed rope.  It's way more durable than a cotton rope and goes a lot faster.  You also want to make sure that your rope is the correct length.  To do this stand in the middle of the rope and the handles should be at your armpit.  You'll want to make sure that the rope you have is adjustable.  The one I got from King Athletic is adjustable. You can pull off the end caps on the handles and pull the rope up.  While you can cut it, I prefer just to knot it shorter because I want the ability to get back to the longer length if wanted to.

I don't think that many of you need directions on how to jump rope, but I want to point our some variations to step up your routine.  You all know the traditional forward jump, but there are also the backward jump (swing the rope backwards) and the side to side jump (jump your feet side to side as you jump).  If you want to step it up a notch there are also the single legged jump (be sure you alternate legs for each set) and then the criss cross (where you cross your legs and then switch each time you jump).  You can look up so many more ideas online.

The next thing I received was the set of resistance bands.  The set included a 5 lb, 10 lb and 15 lb bands.  Resistance bands are the perfect at home workout tool because they are small, compact and easy to store as compared to free weights. Once again you can search the internet for lots of ideas (that's probably how you found my post), but I have few that I want to share with you. The first is from my favorite fitness YouTubers.  MadFit has so many workouts (some of them are so fun because they are choreographed to fun songs), but I like her resistance band workouts.  To the right is one that I like.  If you don't want to watch a video here are a few ideas.

  1. Pull Apart - Hold the band in for you with your arms straight.  Pull the band apart with the aim to get your shoulder blades to touch.  Slowly return to the starting position.  Repeat
  2.  Pull Up - You'll need a long band for this one.  Stand with the band under your feet while holding each end.  Pull your hands up to your chin with your elbows going out to side.  Slower lower back down and repeat.
  3. Bicep Curl - Start with the same setup as a pull up.  Keep your elbows tucked into your side and try to bring your hands up to your shoulder.  Slowly lower down and repeat.
  4. Standing Abduction - This will work your outer thighs and glutes.  Using a loop band (like the ones to the left) wrap the band around your ankles. Slowly life your right leg out to the side while keeps your left leg straight and stable.  You may need to hold on to a chair or a wall for this.  Repeat several times and then switch legs.
  5. Seated Adduction - This will work your inner thighs.  Using a loop band wrap it around your ankles, like you did the previous exercise.  This time face the wall or the chair that you are using for support. Get into a wide stance and squat down a little.  Now with your weight on your left leg, take your right legs and sweep it across your body so it crosses your left leg.  Slowly return to starting and repeat several time before your switch sides.
The last thing I received was a set of massage balls.  I'll be honest with you, I've never used massage ball before and wasn't 100% sure what to do with them.  I understand that they are a way to work out any knots or kinks you have after a workout.  They are rubber balls that are firmer than tennis balls (think lacrosse balls) that can give your a deep tissue massage.  Apparently you can also heat these in the microwave for an added relaxation.  I'll have to take their word for that because I don't have a microwave.  I did a lot of research on what to do with these because I really had no idea.  Basically you just roll the body part that hurts over these balls.  It can be anything from rolling them under you feet, to sitting on them and rolling on them to massage your glutes to laying down with them under your shoulders to massage your shoulders.  I'd never though to use these before, but it's something that I will surely keep trying to see if they work for me.

Leave me a message down below with your at home workout recommendations.

Coconut in your beauty routine

When you thinking of summer, you may also think of coconut.  Did you know that coconut is so multi- purpose?  It contains coconut oil which helps to moisturize skin and hair, coconut water to hydrate and refer and the shell which is great for exfoliation.

Nothing says summer like coconut; the warm, tropical scent, the refreshing thought of cutting a coconut open and sipping out of it with a straw, the balmy feel it has on your skin, and the lustrous glow it gives your tan.

There are quite a number of products out there that contain coconut, but here are some of my favorites.

Bert's Bees Lip Balm - While the first ingredient is beeswax the second is coconut oil and that is part of what makes this lip balm so moisturizing (and my favorite lip balm).

OGX Nourishing Coconut Oil Weightless Hydrating Oil Mist - I have dry, frizzy hair so I need something to help to hydrate my hair, but not leave it limp.  I like that this oil contains coconut oil, but not too much of it as to weigh down my bar.  There is also bamboo extra it in that helps to add in some shine.

Never Ever Grow Up Face Creme - Coconut water is the second ingredient in the face moisturizer that also includes vitamin c (which is my latest favorite ingredient).  This moisturizer helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Gymwear on a Budget

It summer time and that means that I'll have more time do things that I don't always get to do.  One of those things is going to the gym.  As much as I usually don't want to go to the gym, I always feel better after I do.  It's been a while since I've purchased some new gym clothes, so I went on a mini shopping spree.  I'm all about budget shopping so everything I got was from Old Navy and the Gap.  I included my own pictures so that you can see what they look like on a real person and not just the model on the website.   Take a look at my picks and let me know what you would get.

I started off with a pair of pants and a pair of shorts.

The pants are the High Rise Elevate Color Block Compression Leggings from Old Navy.  These are thick leggings so I think I might be saving these more for the winter.  I love that they are high rise as I feel that it gives me some extra support.  I do wish that they had one of those hidden pockets that some of my other leggings have through.

The shorts are the Color Block Run Shorts, also from Old Navy.  These have a 3 inch inseam which is the shortest that I will go.  Plus they have a brief liner inside so I don't need to worry that anything is going to be exposed.  And it has that hidden pocket that I love!

Moving on to tops I wanted something that would look cute and keep me cool in the summer.  I picked out a mix of tank tops and t-shirts.

The first one is the Racerback Performance Tank from Old Navy.  This is a simple tank, but I love it!  It's a little loose and breathable and super affordable.

The last thing I purchase from Old Navy is the Relaxed Performance Tee.  I like that this was a little more than just a t-shirt as it has a fun saying on it. It's light and breathable and had a rounded hem which I think adds a little extra over a straight hem.

Moving on to the Gap, I got a tee and a tank.  The t-shirt is nothing special, but that's why I like it. It's the GapFit Breathe V-Neck.  It's a little more fitted than the other t-shirt I got, but it's still comfy.

Last is my favorite! As soon as I saw the back of the GapFit Breathe Open Back Tank I knew I had to have it.  The back is open and you have the option to tie it or leave the flaps open.

What are you wearing to the gym?  I'd love to hear what you recommend so leave me a comment below.

Sunscreen is not just for the summer

As the weather gets nicer we need to start thinking more about sunscreen. While we should be wearing sunscreen all year, it is especially important when the sun's rays get more direct during the spring and summer. There are literally hundreds of different types and brands of sunscreen out there, but here are just a few that come highly recommended.

Most Expensive Makeup at Sephora

Sephora is not a place for cheap makeup, but some products are just ridiculously expensive. Here are the most expensive makeup products at Sephora. Let's go through the makeup you'll need to do a full face.

Starting with foundation, we'll use the La Mer Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation. This medium coverage foundation claims to be " long-wearing, natural, flexible coverage makes pores and imperfections virtually disappear." At $120 I do hope it's all that is says it is. Being that is comes in a 1oz bottle, this foundation is $120 an once. Compare this to Maybeline foundations that run between $9 and 12 an ounce.

To help you with your capitation you can use the $120 Surratt Beauty Artistique Sculpting Brush. Sephora used to carry the $250 Artistique Face Brush, but it's no longer on their website. This angled brush is made from natural hair and "is crafted from hand-tied natural fibers by a skilled artisan."

Now lets add some color to your cheeks with the Tom Ford Soleil Eye and Cheek Palette ($155). According to Sephora.com, this palette is "the ultimate Tom Ford Soleil accessory. This reflective ivory-and-gold-colored clutch contains a color palette for eyes and cheeks that lets you create an array of luxurious looks. It features four eyeshadows, a highlighter, and a blush in two color waves: sultry, bronzed warm hues, and sweet, incandescent cool shades." There are two colorways to choose from and while it is nice $155 is pricey.

Now you'll need to move on to your eyes, you can turn to the Natasha Denona Eyeshadow Palette 28. At a price of $239 you have two choices to add some sparkle: Purple Blue and Green Brown. Sephora.com says that "the palette features an array of ultra-pigmented, unique shades and finishes. The revolutionary formula is smooth to the touch so that eye color glides seamlessly onto your lids while providing vivid color payoff with a silky-soft feel." With a total of 70g, palette is $3.41 a gram! Let's compare this to a an Elf palette (which in my opinion is high quality at a low price). The Elf palette is $0.77 a gram.

Eyeliner is the next step to making your eyes pop. You can use this super fancy liquid eyeliner from Christian Louboutin Luminous Ink Liner. It claims to be "highly pigmented ink to give eyes a glossy sheen." It also won't smudge or smear and last all day.  At $75 this makes this eyeliner almost $19 a milliliter.  As a comparison, Covergirl liquid eyeliner is about $4.25 a milliliter.

Now that your eyes and cheeks are done, you'll want some lashes to step up the look. You can choose from the 10 pairs of lashes in the Velour Lashes Lash Vanity. The whole set is $270 which is $27 per pair. Compare this to Ardelle Lashes which come in at about $4 a pair. This set includes a full-size Lash Adhesive, Too Easy Lash Applicator, and a removable, light-up mirror with a spacious storage area.

Lastly let's add some lip color. The Christian Louboutin Silky Satin Lip Colour is $90. If satin isn't your thing you can also get it in a sheer or matte formula. It claims to be long lasting and a "unique blend of ultra-fine color pigments express deep and generous color with a silky satin finish. Formulated with a complex of natural oils and seed butters, it enhances moisture for up to four hours and creates a protective effect against dryness." It is $692 on ounce! Compare this to a long lasting L'Oreal lipstick which is $52 an ounce.

At end of the day you'll need to remove all of this makeup. You have such luxury on your face so you don't want to remove it with just anything. You'll want the Erno Laszlo White Marble Cleansing Oil. It's a "gentle, luxurious cleansing oil that dissolves surface impurities and visibly tightens pores." At $68 it breaks down to $10 an ounce. Compare this to the Bert's Bees cleansing oil which is less than $3 an ounce.

Were you surprised by these prices?  Have you tried any of these products?  Let me know what you think!
